Travel Apps

If you’re like me, you’ll find fun in every part of this travel journey – from the countdown to going to the ATM to withdraw a few million. In Bali, the local currency equates to about 15,000 rupiah for every US Dollar. So, to take out the typical bank maximum of $400, you’ll request 6,000,000 rupiah.

To help you measure both the days left until you departure, and the difference in currency, and everything in between, we’ve created a short list of apps to download on your phone to assist you in travel prep and once you’re here.

1. Countdown

There’s no shortage of countdown apps available, but we recommend adding one to keep track of just how many days you have left until setting out for the trip of a lifetime in Bali Baecation. Use a tropical picture for bonus points, because the views here are absolutely breathtaking.

2. XE Converter

This app will help you navigate the huge gap in converting the currency differences so a 32,000 price tag doesn’t blow your mind. I use this app around the world so I’m not miscalculating or giving myself a headache trying to remember the exchange rate.

3. Google Translate

The bad news, Balinese is a tricky language to understand or learn. The good news? Many of the local residents speak English here, so you won’t have to worry too much about the language barrier, especially considering, you’ll be with us and we handle all of that for you! For those few times when you’ll be venturing out, or trying to decipher a sign, download the Google Translate app for easy translations. bonus, download the language to access it offline.

4. Skype

If you’re not interested in adding an international plan to your cell phone, or getting a sim card upon arrival (we rarely do when traveling abroad), Skype is the simple and cheap way to go. I recommend adding a few dollars to your account in case you need to make a local call while outside the country (rates in Bali are about $0.45/minute). For calls home, you can always contact another Skype user (audio or video) for free, and Apple Facetime works with wifi to stay in touch.

5. Whatsapp

This app is essentially the Skype of texting. Set it up before you leave, and you’ll be able to text away with friends, family, and everyone else while abroad. This is a popular service here in Bali, so if you ever set up a private excursion, your host and/or taxi driver will most likely have Whatsapp. Apple iMessage will also work with wifi for keeping in touch with other Apple users.
